Building an Online Empire: 16 Types of Websites You Can Create for Profit

websites profitA vast plot of land can be used for many purposes; to build schools, residential houses, nightclubs and shopping malls. People visit these locations to purchase products, learn skills and have fun.

The internet is similar. Websites are often created to accommodate the needs and desires of the crowd. People will visit these sites or use them to get both information or entertainment.

When generating income online, view the web as virtual real estate: like physical buildings, websites are profitable entities that can be developed or bought.

Successful web entrepreneurs think like investors. Often willing to explore ideas and concepts outside of their niche interests, they build sites with the aim of improving their overall net worth. They think not only in terms of ongoing profit but resell values and how each site complements their whole portfolio of web properties.

I’m always looking to build/purchase turnkey and established sites because its not only fun but very challenging at the same time. Non-blog websites are especially interesting to me and I thought I’ll make a list of some site ideas you can develop.

16 Types of Websites You Can Create to Make Money

Every website idea or type is a potential winner. None of them can be ruled out definitively because a big part of any site’s profit potential depends on how well you market the site and grow it from the ground up. If you are an excellent marketer and strategic CEO, it’s not difficult to make even the most common ideas a success.

What sites are worth developing? Most sites are, if you have time and are willing to invest time/funds and energy on growing the sites aggressively. Being an optimistic webmaster, I would say that you can turn a profit on anything if you really work at it.

The Sitepoint marketplace and Digital Point marketplace are probably two of the more popular places to buy websites of all sorts. Monitor them if you’re interested in expanding your virtual estate. You’ll find all of the site ideas below in both forums:

  1. Affiliate Review Website. Create a website that reviews affiliate products like make money online programs, web hosting services etc. Run it on Wordpress and update it everyday with affiliate feeds or articles. How much you’ll make depends on how thick (amount of content) the website is.

  2. Product Fan Blog. Create a Wordpress blog around a popular product and update everyday with news about the product. The iPhone is a good example of a hot product to choose. Traffic will be quite decent over time if the product/s have longevity.

  3. Auction websites. Create a website that is similar to eBay to allow users to sell and buy products from each other. You will generate income by monetizing through ads and drawing a commission through each sale. You might get some steady revenue if you sell high ticket products or go niche enough to get a loyal user base.

  4. Dating Websites. Dating websites are communities which allow users to register, chat with and meet other interested users. They can be easily setup with turnkey scripts although you’ll really need a customized template and some coding work done to make it competitive or attractive enough to get some users. Markus Frind is currently the biggest individual Adsense publisher and makes well over $10K a day from his free dating site, Plenty of Fish.

  5. Made for Adsense Websites. These are websites with a keyword domain and they come with a bunch of pre written articles around a specific topic. Examples of common topics include acne, cancer, health and finance. These are generally boring, low maintenance sites that are plastered with contextual ads. Incredibly easy to create using the Wordpress platform.

  6. Affiliate Product Website. This is a salespage which sells an electronic product like an eBook. Create the product, buy an existing one or just get someone to do it. The main way to make money is to drive or buy traffic to your salespage and make money when they buy your eBook or opt into your email list. This is an easy way to generate some real income, especially if you are have a great niche product or am skilled in promoting your personal brand and salespage.

  7. Online Games/Arcade Sites. Get someone to develop an online game that is for members only and earn money by selling points, which allow users to unlock extra options within the game. Arcade sites are simply sites with a collection of flash or online games. They are monetized through display ads. Games can spread quickly if they are very well designed and appealing.

  8. Forums or Social Network. Pick a topic that is able to attract a decent amount of users and create a forum or social network. Income will not come quickly and a lot of work is needed to build the community. Create a blog on the same domain and use for promotional purposes. There is a potential to earn a good amount of money when the forum gets big or popular.

  9. Specialized Search Engines. Build a search tool that allows visitors find media of specific types. Include your adsense ads within the search pages. This sort of tools usually don’t do very well unless you provide additional value on top of search. Examples of things to add include ajax search, folksonomy and recommendation engines.

  10. Paid Membership Site. These are membership sites which provide ongoing educational lessons on a specific topic or offer a large archive of resources, along with a forum. An example of this is the Teaching Sells website. Members will pay a fixed fee every month to maintain their membership.

  11. Design/Coding Service Site. Create a website that offers customized logo or website design, alongside coding for PSD to XHTML, Wordpress and Joomla. Hire freelance coders and designers and manage them. Pay them a portion of each sale and promote your website through blogs and webmaster forums.

  12. File Hosting Website. Set up a file host which allows users to upload and share their files online with other users. There’s a tremendous amount of competition in this niche so its very difficult to make some real money unless you innovate on features or market it well.

  13. Web Directories. A web directory provides listings for websites and makes money from both display advertising and sale of premium listings. Most of the work needs to be focused on marketing and branding the site. Niche directories with a good reputation might find it easier to make money.

  14. Online Web tool. This includes URL shorteners, spell checkers, picture editors, file converters and various webmaster tools (keyword volume, link popularity). Visitors will often return to your site to use these tools if they are comprehensive enough or if your site is well designed and genuinely useful.

  15. Proxies. Proxies are websites which allow a websurfer to not only surf anonymously but bypass certain filters which prevent one from viewing a site. They are popular with the Myspace crowd and will often require a dedicated server. There are many proxies on the market but they may be worth exploring. Income is largely passive.

  16. Commercial Template Sites. Basically this involves the creation of readymade website templates for sale. They can be bundled up into sales packages and traffic can be obtained through PPC advertising. If you’re not interested in producing original templates, you can run the site using affiliate feeds from the other more established template websites like Template Monster.

The ideas mentioned can all be created by yourself using an existing script or you can set up your own by hiring a coder and designer. It’s more or less DIY, although you will need to some research on the market and have some basic webmaster skills

Now for your opinion. I imagine that some readers might want to start purchasing or building up some of these websites. What do you personally think has the most potential for profit and which idea would you recommend?

  • Great list of site ideas. I have tried a few on them in the past. Plus having a variety of different sites keeps your eggs in different baskets.

  • I would say Dating.

  • First of all, great list! It’s exciting to see the multitude of possibilities that exist to make money online. Other ideas would be an online storefront for a bricks and mortar store, or just ecommerce in general, freebie sites that give away downloadable media (images, audio, movies, etc) an generate income from ads. Once you’ve made your millions with all of these methods, you can create a make money online blog and tell your story to the world :)

  • Wow, I loved this article. you did a great job describing the sites on the web.

  • While I love this post, and, it’s core to my last 5 months of professional work I would like to caution everyone going down most of these routes posted. If you are in it for just the money then you wont be able to last long enough to build/maintain it to a point where it will make money. Put your passion and heart behind the work, then everything will follow.

    3. Auction websites - this is a very crowded space, overcrowded and the reason why ebay has to raise their prices so much lately to stay profitable, I just sold my shares in ebay yesterday FYI, BRK.B for the win.

    4. Dating websites - Plenty of Fish is run by a very smart asp.net programmer, not your average blogger. Also, he is king here making millions per year. There have been about 20 web 2.0 dating sites all pop up this last year, and non compete with the web 1.0 plenty of fish.

    5. Made for Adsense Websites - Google knows “dupes” better than anyone else. Dont expect this to last long at all.

    6. See Richjerk.com, now thats a clever approach, no clue on how successful its doing.

    9. Search Engines - Buddy of mine TraderMike started FavBot.com recently, and actually it’s found me a ton of content I never new existed…..think niche when you create lists with it, you will be surprised.

    13. WOOT! Huge international B2B opportunities here. Start small in a niche that you are passionate about.

Dosh Dosh………..you rock as usual. I cant wait to show you my blog in Jan, I’ve learned a ton from you!

  • Doing reviews of affiliate programs and writing honest reviews of it is definitely a great idea. Have SEO friendly titles such as ‘Is [affiliate program] a good affiliate’ or ‘The best affiliate programs from [cj, azoogle, neverblue, etc.]‘ Nice list

  • I’ve always thought of the internet as virtual real estate.. you gave some good ideas for a second or third site to add.

Im doing pretty well with the one I have, and have the time to expand. Now its just about finding the right topic.

  • A nice mix of possibilities for people at different levels. Some of the ideas may seem “already done” but it always just takes a bit of twist here, a drop of difference there to put new life into an old idea. C’mon, how many ideas you’ve seen are original?

MillionDollarWiki is a total rip-off from MillionDollarHomepage and yet, the guy made over $100k from it.

As for made for Adsense sites not lasting long, there are so many that run stolen content and despite my repeated reports to Google, they are still around, happily running Adsense.

So yeah, I’m going to start a couple of made for Adsense sites myself, but not with stolen content - just rewritten crap articles. I bet they’ll earn me a nice passive income from AdSense.

  • Wow! Thats one comprehensive list you have there!
Now some of these are really profitable, only if you are committed enough!

But to make it really big I would say you should focus and get to the top of any one of these niches and then think about divulging into others!

  • An awesome list of great information as always :)

  • Great post with good ideas to make money online. Like everything else in life, none of the ideas will make any money unless you put some effort into it.

  • Great work!
I like the 8th point, Forums or Social Network. If you have community You will be able the develop a good monetization.

  • Great list, Maki you did a great job, there are very good points on this list, and everyone can find the right one for him or her

  • I actually feel there is a big need of a nice dating website in my country .. ^_^..

Nice list maki.. keep up good work

  • I am experimenting with passive sites providing search facilities - but I do not think that Adsense is the best way to monetize these.

I find that getting the right ads for the keywords entered in the search string to be a real pain in the neck.

Anyone care to help me hone the page?

  • nice

  • This is a great summary. Thanks.

  • Very nice list. I am in the process of trying to start my “web empire”. Its a lot more work than I thought would be.

  • First of all many many thanks for your brief listings, it’s great, and can be used immediately, because there’s Joomla! and Wordpress to use, and they have so many great plugins to enhance your cool site.
    Thx

  • Excellent post! Nice interesting ideas, some of them I never heard. I am doing affiliate review website with a combination of some adsense. So when I dont get a sale, I might get some adsense clicks.
    then again, great post!

  • Niche dating sites are a good way to break into an extremely competitive and saturated market. There is still a hell of a lot of money that can be made if you think outside the box.

  • Dan, I disagree. These dating sites rise and fall every day, literally. It’s the same as local search sites. Some of these ideas are great, some of them are chasing crowded markets with almost certain chance at failure.

  • I am giving away a social media script for free worth $297, and this post by maki came in time for those who would love to own a script of their own.

  • I love the dating site idea. Markus Frind is brilliant.

  • You pretty much covered them all, but I’d add that there is plenty of competition in all those niches because these kinds of sites has been around for many years. So, unless you are a savvy marketer, or introduce some very unique features that give you an edge over your competition, such sites won’t make a lot of money.

  • That’s a great article for aspiring entrepreneurs. I have also got some good ideas! Thanks.

  • Thanks for this great post. Personally whats worked really well for me and has allowed me to quit my job is
building a website around affiliate programs and Adsense. I’ve basically combined some of the website
businesses you’ve mentioned and have had great success.

However I’m not really confident with some of the others you have mentioned as some of these website businesses are already dominated by big companies and is almost impossible to break into unless you have great SEO skills. So I think you should have a caveat or list these websites in terms of degree of difficulty.

By the way, you’ve mentioned one website business that I haven’t considered which is the paid membership website. It seems to be something that everyone is getting into and making good money with.

After all we all have expertises that we can share that people will pay for. And if it can be done through a website format rather than talking and meeting with people everyday I think it makes total sense. I also think this is probably one of the top businesses because of the recurring revenue which is the best type of revenue in my opinion.

Getting paid one shot commissions from Google and other affiliate programs is very limiting but if you can couple that with a paid membership website you’re really expanding your full income potential.
    So thanks for that idea!

Gotta go and implement that asap! lol

  • Dosh, I can not thank you enough for this wonderful article.

    Thanks

  • Thats a very nice list of websites where u can make a lot of cash, i think that blogs and squidoo can generate large profits.

  • A nice list, good post as usual Maki, but among the lot there is no doubt that dating/entertainment is the hot niche.

  • Another idea is to start a citizen journalist blog. Google tells you what people are looking for and you need to pick those topics and produce some useful content around it. BTW can you comment on my blog and how to improve. TIA

  • Hi Maki,
    German translation ready under
    http://www.elizzza.net/2007/12/16/dosh-16-typen-von-profitablen-websites/

  • Nice post. There’s quite a few good ideas there.

  • wow so many ways in which you can earn though i prefer blogging.

  • This dating site idea is very interesting…

  • Great Ideas!!!

    i will try them ;=)

  • Also: start a mini site with pages describing 16 ways to make money online, in depth :-P
I agree with the person who mentioned e-commerce: drop shipping can work if you do the complex preparatory research. Also, widgets/piggybacking on facebook are also popular now.
    -JF

  • You don’t even mention porn. Porn is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Makes much more money then any of these other “ideas”. =)

  • Randyrockpile on December 17th, 2007

I’ve got an idea that will evolutionize online shopping. I just can’t believe any one has thought of it yet. with this idea there are 4 main incomes that will generate miliions of dollars a day. I need 1 or two partners two help create this site. This is no joke and not an ad.
the skills that are required to create this is the only cost. Web site creation game creation and so on.Email me: randy46@telus.net

  • I agree with the making your own product via ebook. I am just starting this avenue right now.

I never really thought about running my own specialized search engine before. Might be worth a look into.

    Good list.

    Mike

  • very nice list but some of this niches require a lot of money to start like Proxies and file hosting

  • Hi Maki - I always find your posts so insightful and well researched. As you mentioned, building and maintaining any of these options is not an easy task. It is time consuming and requires much passion for the chosen niche as well as being a driven entrepreneur. You have to have a solid foundation to succeed and that requires knowledge of the internet, the available technology and your field. I fully agree with Marc’s comments and if you start it just for the money - you won’t last very long.

  • Whereas most of these ideas are probably overpopulated on the web already, I agree that the web should be thought of as real estate. However, when deciding how to develop your “land” you should focus on what interests you and what you know. Focus on your strengths and come up with your own ideas. Do not take ideas from a list of someone elses ideas no matter how good.

  • Dosh….the number of the comments is cut off. It looks like it repeats after 10, but, it seems a DIV or something overlaps all but the last number and the period. So a “22.” looks like a “2.” for example.

    IE 7, WinXP

  • Nice list. Some good ideas there.

  • What are your feelings on turnkey sites?

  • Great recommendations. I’d say MFA’s are easiest. Dating market is SATURATED so if you want to enter I hope you love online dating as it will take a while to get going.

  • Another idea is to fill a simple need of bloggers or website owners and join the social networks to promote it. I got the idea to display all the best RSS feed icons and provide a quick icon design service. I posted the site on MyBlogLog days ago and did a stumble. My traffic is at around 150 page views a day.

  • nice ways to earn on the internet.have used some of them.

  • Wow, really great list. thanks.

  • Definitely something to chew over. Thanks for being so comprehensive as usual.

  • what about building an online application?

  • This wonderful article!

  • Awesome post! I think the web directory is a great idea, in fact I’m getting ready to exploit it on my niche site. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    -Thom

  • Great list of resources. thanks

  • it is a greate sea for the knowledge of new web technology in different fields.

  • What a great list! Thanks!
I’m going to build and flip some of those types of sites!

  • I had no idea that there were so many different forms of money producing websites. I would have guessed at max, 6

  • Thanks for the good list, These seems like good niche. I just need to find the time for extra websites ;)

  • Thank you ;)
I’m all for #1 - Not as easy as it looks like at first glance :\

  • devansh kathal on March 27th, 2008

i want to earn money without investment.
