Four Simple Ways to Make More Money with Adsense’s Firefox Referrals Program
Google Adsense has a referral program which will allow you to earn up to US $1 everytime you refer one new user to install the Firefox browser. The more people you convert to the Firefox browser, the more income you will earn from your website.
Unlike other Google Adsense units, this referral program allows you to directly recommend products by using action-based text, which directs a user to click through on any specific links or ad banners.
Google Adsense’s Help Center clearly shows that this is something that is allowed:
Actively endorse the products you refer. Unlike with AdSense for content ads, we encourage you to endorse referral products by calling attention to the button or text link. If you believe in the quality of the product that you’re referring, feel free to let your users know! Of course, in line with our policies, you may not click your own ads nor encourage conversions for deceitful reasons.
Why I Like Promoting Google’s Firefox Referrals Program
Firefox’s credibility, usefulness and excellent features is the main reason why you should consider using Adsense’s Firefox referral program. Firefox is really a terrific and secure web browser that I and many others love and you will only be adding value for your visitors, by actively promoting adoption and usage of Firefox.
Secondly, Firefox is a risk-free investment that anyone can make. The web browser is free for download and your visitor will not have to give their personal details or email addresses. This may make conversion more likely to occur than affiliate programs which require initial investment of some sort from the interested user.
If you would like to try the Firefox browser, I’ve attached a referral banner below. Note clearly how I’m openly endorsing the referral product by encouraging you to download and try it for yourself. Don’t be afraid to do the same for your website.
Copywriting Tips for More Firefox Referrals
Writing sales copy for Firefox referrals is not a difficult process and there are some key elements which may help to make your promotional text more efficient.
- Mention Firefox Benefits. People need to know how Firefox will help them have a better and more efficient browsing experience. This list of benefits should be direct and factually accurate. You should also avoid overselling and the use of marketing speak or overly technical jargon.
- Compare Firefox with other browsers. I have not seen many marketers do this and I do think this is one of the most important conversion tricks you can use. People want to know what they are currently using matches up to what you are pitching. They need to know they are missing out on something.
- Include Referral links within Relevant Content. People are more likely to convert when you are promoting your affiliate link within a natural context, such as a relevant article on technology or one on Firefox itself.
- Associate your Site with Firefox. One of the easiest ways to convert users who visit your website is to inform them your site is ‘best viewed with Firefox’, which may indeed be true. Tying your site to Firefox will encourage some loyal visitors to consider using the new browser to experience your site.
- Outline Your Experiences. If you’ve been using Firefox for a long time, it will be useful to include your personal experiences you’ve had with other browsers and your opinions on Firefox. This will give your copy some validity while endowing it with a human voice which evokes empathy.
Four Simple Ways to Make More Money With Firefox Referrals
Here is a list of the four main ways to get more Firefox referrals. Do note that some of these tips can also be applied for all the other Google Referral programs as well.
I shall be writing more on Google Referrals specifically, but meanwhile these four points will help you set up Firefox referrals as an income source.
1. Create a Referral Landing Page or Fan Site
Simply register a generic domain name and set up a website or one-page sales letter outlining the benefits of using Firefox. Make it look clean, simple and helpful. Include your Firefox referral link throughout the copy or use a banner. You should choose to only show ads for non-Firefox users.
I have also seen referral websites encourage Firefox downloads by giving away free software and installation guides or user tricks. While they may seem like fan powered websites, they are thinly disguised affiliate sites whose ultimate aim is to get you to use their referral link and recommend others to their site.
There are some advantages in creating a referral site, namely because you can be used for social media sites like StumbleUpon. Here is an example (screenshot below) of a Firefox referral page, which I aptly discovered while stumbling.
The affiliate links are indicated with red arrows:

2. Write an Article about Firefox
Write about the Firefox browser or its plugins and features. Keep up to date on its developments and publish short blog posts about it. Alternatively if you own a tech-oriented blog, do a weekly or monthly roundup of Firefox related articles, themes and extensions.
If you have written about Firefox in the past (do a keyword search) visit those webpages/blog posts and insert referral links into the articles. This evidently will not work with sites in all content niches. Be very sure that your Firefox article adds value for your reader as well.
3. Use a Referral Banner or Text Link on your Website
This simply involves setting aside some space on your website and putting up a Firefox referral banner or text link. Places to consider include the space above your site logo, your blog sidebar, within the single post pages or in the footer itself.
Remember to include promotional copy (e.g. Browse the web safer with Firefox) as it will help to improve conversions. Here’s an example of a prominent ad banner strategically placed among content.
Note the use of a recommendation tagline too:

You may also want to consider only targeting the right visitors. Here is a PHP code that will only shows ad banners or links to non-Firefox users:
<?php
if(strpos(@$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],'Firefox') === FALSE) {
?>
<INSERT FIREFOX REFERRAL CODE HERE>
<?php
}
?>
Just place this code on any location on your website and the ad will only be seen by visitors not using the Firefox browser.
You can also use a simple CSS hack to display a simple text message for users who are not using the Firefox toolbar. This can be inserted right at the top of your website or on individual post pages as well.
Click here to get the code (taken from Sizlopedia) and remember to download the firefox icon and upload it to your own server. If you are using a Wordpress blog, insert this code before </head> in your header.php file.
Here’s a screenshot of the ad in action, at the very top of Dosh Dosh.

Alternatively, you might like to use Explorer Destroyer, a script that is considerably more aggressive, when it comes to promoting the use of Firefox to your site visitors.
4. Target Social Media Channels and Communities
Less web savvy communities are good places to acquire easy conversions. This would work best if you have a referral website/landing page, which will make it far easier to share your referral link.
Places to consider include forums, social video sites like Youtube, networking sites like FaceBook, Bebo or Myspace or even free online dating websites or community-driven info sites like Yahoo Answers.
If you are adventurous enough, there are literally hundreds of quality sites which will allow you to interact with others or drop a discreet link to your referral page.
This trick here is not to spam, but to connect with others on high traffic websites and share your link in a relevant context.
More Firefox Referral Marketing Tips
Some common sense guidelines apply: For your flagship website, don’t push Firefox too hard because it may irritate your visitors and hurt your brand. It’s more appropriate to promote Firefox harder on sites you care less about.
Most of the Firefox marketing methods are variations of the four points I’ve mentioned above. Want more creative ideas? Check out the Firefox marketing section in the Spread Firefox website.
While they focus on non-affiliate promotions, some of the tactics suggested can be easily applied for your own Firefox referrals conversion plan.

a salespage for firefox thats very interesting.
Thanks Maki for talking about FireFox. I love FireFox. Unfortunately, its referral program doesn’t convert too well from most websites.
About 20% of my blogs visitors use Internet Explorer. And I created a script that shows a FireFox banner only to people who use IE. But that banner didn’t convert well at all. About 1 out of 3300 people who used IE downloaded the browser. Total earnings $1. Thats when I disabled it.
Maybe the response will be better for websites that have a broader IE audience and caters to people who are not too net savvy. But its not the best referral program out there. And most people will be able to find other better programs to promote.
@Ankesh
Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts on Firefox.
I think the response for Firefox’s referral program will be much better when you push it. No affiliate program converts very well without much attention.
I happen to know that a well designed Firefox landing page/fan site will make you a tidy sum of money. Having a dedicated landing page (even one hosted on your blog) just opens up so many possibilities for marketing via online communities.
Anyway, Firefox is such a fantastic product.. I’ll be happy to join most of the Spread Firefox affiliates and promote it for free. ^_^
I’ve found this wordpress plugin to be a great source of firefox affiliate income:

Interesting idea Maki. I had never really thought of building a landing page devoted solely to get people to download Firefox through the referral, let alone building a site around it. You’ve given me a few ideas, though that I can hopefully put to practical use.
I’ve done the IE only referral trick and it’s working perfectly. Check out my blog WITH IE and see how it works. Great! Never thought of targeting ONLY IE users.
I think you need to update your view on Firefox, and do some research into this. Firefox has since long become a joke as far as credibility and security is concerned. It has been going on for ages now, one critical issue after the next. At the moment Firefox is about as unreliable as IE with even more serious security issues on record at the moment than IE.
Those people that still believe that Firefox is safer than IE are deluding themselves and can only be seen as either ignorant or misinformed by all the early Firefox marketing hype that has backfired in the most horrible way.
Anybody looking for a secure alternative has only Opera as option at the moment.
I’ve not been blogging all that long, about 6 months roughly, so to continue finding sites like this which offers so many hints and tips is a joy!
I’ll definitely be trying out some of the points you make above.
Thank you!
I am a firefox user. it is a great browser, recently i encountered some issues with getting my new updates working with all my extension which proves to have receivean error 203, but i quickly solved it deleting away 3 files
Extension.ini
Extension.rdf
Extension.cache
Which could be found in your profile of the mozilla firefox, by doing that you are able to automatic reinstall all your works back to normal on your firefox.
What a nifty idea. I like the idea of being able to only show the referral to non Firefox users. I’m a HUGE fan of Firefox and will never go back to using other browsers again.
Great tips and write up Maki. Have been using Firefox for years and won’t ever turn back to Explorer. I think it can be tough to convey to others how great Firefox is because so many are scared of leaving I.E. But these 4 tips are definitely ones I will be testing.
That is excellent if you find the right people…over 90% of Internet Users are now using Firefox (my guess from my traffic details).
I don’t think it is a great idea to actively promote it because those that already use it will be annoyed
I like the idea with displaying the bar on top for internet explorer visitors, thanks for sharing
I love Firefox… every serious web surfer should be using it, wish they had more options as far as color for their referral buttons. White kinda sticks out on my Blog
Hey Maki,
Thanks for sharing.
I love Firefox and can’t surf without it. About 50% of my readers are on IE, so there is a good pool of them to introduce FF to
Cheers
James
Thanks a lot for this blog post. I will surely use this information to help me in future with my business. Keep up the great work!
I love Firefox too, thanks for your tips
This is a great marketing idea, especially where encouraging users to install Firefox for better viewing of your site. I’ve found a number of people complaining of a correlation between certain sites (like wordpress) and issues with IE. (Especially IE6)
It also can get irritating to have to continually optimize your site for different browsers. So this advice is like killing two birds with one stone. Awesome!
I hate to leave an off subject comment but Google Announces The End of PageRank and introduces a new Digg like system to replace it. It’s yesterday’s news, Read all about it here:
http://revellian.com/2007/09/25/google-announces-pagerank/
I think it is a bad idea!
Don’t forget who told you!!!!!
I never knew about this before…thanks alots…Firefox is always my best p.c browser…!!!
Majority of my site visitors are Firefox already. Don’t think this program will target my site visitors accurately.
Great post, Maki. I had 3 posts specifically about Firefox that were popular. I wish I had loaded the posts with referral ads. I’m going to go back and add them in to the posts, and see if I can get a few referrals. Also, the PHP code is pretty slick for non-FF users.
Thanks Maki.
I was wondering if you have the site URI – of the landing page screen shot that you have in your post.
I ask because I didn’t find those banner ads in my Google Adsense account. And I don’t know how to use our own custom banners with Google referral products (Google provides javascript.) So if you have the link, would love to go over its source code and see how they’ve set things up…
Nice tips. Mentioning that your site is best viewed with X browser is normally pretty tacky, but you’ve executed it subtly and nicely. I like that you welcome them first and then deliver the Firefox message. Good work.
Thx for the tips, especially the PHP CODE. It’s the most simple and effective on promoting Firefox when we can skip the sales page, which few people actually read…
Hi Maki,
This is the 2nd day of mine on your blog and i m already falling in love with it. Its really cool stuff. I have already put top Referral bar for FF in my blog. Hope it will do some extra income for me;)
Thanx for such a great plateform to get information. God bless U.
i just like the idea. but my does google promote firefox that much ?
Waaayyyyy ahead of you…
dcs-media.com/fireday/default.aspx
BTW, great article!
For Hoto, because Google owns Firefox. You didn’t know yet?
I’ve made tens of dollars with Firefox, without landing page, just little text and small banner in sidebar. You can see here downloaditnow.blogspot.com
This is a wonderful idea! I hadn’t heard of this program yet, but just from your easy description, I’m going to go look at it now, Thanks for the heads up!
I really love this idea. It is not very easy to make money from the referral program at all, even with a lot of traffic.
I have tryed PHP code in by Blogger Blog, the problem is its showing ad in the firefox browser too
I tried the css hack mentioned above but when the text link comes up, it’s not the firefox link that shows, it got a link to a game site. I tried doing a new adsense setup and still does not show the firefox link. Another thing I noticed is on another site I have, the text link to firefox tends to rotate ads. This never used to do that until about 2-3 weeks ago. What gives?
Hi—Maki:
Am using some of your tips on my blog, will follow-up on conversions in a month. (or two)
