How I Make Money During the Weekend

make-money-blog.jpgOne of the best ways to make money online is to create profitable websites that provide steady income. We’ve already seen how blogs make money in a previous article, which I’m sure has motivated many of you in several ways.

Making money through blogs, websites and online businesses really do require a lot of online time in front of the computer.

That’s just the case for every bootstrapper or online entrepreneur who is trying to make lots of money on the internet. Everyone wants their projects to be automated and passive, while providing recurring income that increases every month.

That scenario will eventually come for some of you but to get there, you’ll need to grit your teeth and get through the grind of trying to make money online.

Which brings me to the topic of this article: making money on the weekend.

Making Money Online During the Weekend

The weekend is usually the time to relax and take things a little easier. The free time you have on the weekend shouldn’t be spent churning out lengthy articles, primarily because the weekend is a slow traffic day and not many people are online.

Instead of putting out detailed articles on Dosh Dosh or my other websites, I usually take a break from content production and focus on some other details.

These include the following:

  • Networking. Building relationships is important when it comes to making money. These relationships can get you business deals, recommendations or just simply a link or mention from another website. I usually try to network via IM or email with a few people. Nothing heavy here, just touching base and saying hi or what’s up.

  • Answering Questions. Replying to feedback gives your audience a good impression and is very important for every site or business. All the emails that need replies are marked with a star and I’ll usually reply them on the weekend when I have more time. I’ll usually try to reply to some comments on the blogs I own as well.

  • Creating a Weekly To-Do List. I usually create a to-do list for the next week and try to complete them before the upcoming weekend. I like weekly instead or daily to-do lists because they allow me to work through the tasks at my own pace. If you’re interested, I’m using Tadalist, an online organizer for my weekly to-do lists.

  • On-Site SEO. Search engine traffic is money. Optimizing your site in order to improve your search ranks helps you to get more web traffic and hence profits.I have too many sites to optimize daily so I schedule all my SEO work on the weekends. This includes doing minor tweaks such as adding keywords to title tags or improving my internal link architecture.

  • Web Design. Like the SEO work, I usually do all the design tweaks for my sites on the weekend. I usually do a quick check on my sites through different browsers, order a few graphics from a designer or play around with the actual layout elements to put up a few more examples of social proof.

  • Monetization. I’ll usually run a quick check on my stats packages to determine traffic weight for specific pages to determine if I should set up some ads to capture the traffic. I’ll go through my Google Adsense dashboard and do a more thorough check at the performance of the ads.

I’ll also check the conversion ratio for my affiliate programs and make some necessary changes. I only do all these weekly because I don’t see any point in doing them on a daily basis.

  • Acquiring Knowledge. I subscribe to a lot of feeds and use several meme-trackers regularly in combination with del.icio.us. During the week, I’ll bookmark web pages that I want to read in detail and tag it as ‘toread’ on my del.icio.us account.

I’ll spend some time on the weekend reading all these articles. I’ll also read any books or eBooks I’ve bought recently. Knowing how to make money is half the battle won.

  • Doing Things I Enjoy. Balance in work and social life is quite important, especially because doing things away from work will rejuvenate your working life and hunger for success. I’ll usually do some downtown shopping or go out on Saturday night, either to a club or for a simple dinner and movie with friends.

On Sunday, I’ll do some sports (basketball) or hit the gym or pool. I like time away from my projects and I feel that they really put things in perspective. You might easily make 10K in a month but after all, its all about being happy and contented with your life.

None of these methods directly help me to make money but they are as just as essential as negotiating with a potential advertiser over ad deals for your sites.

All the little things you do on the weekend do eventually add up in monetary terms.

  • Seriously, I do not know how you do it. Either you are Superman or you spend 24 hours a day at this.

  • Alan on July 22nd, 2007

So basically, you’re saying that on weekends you just keep on working? Web design, SEO or acquiring new knowledge is not exactly what I’d call a relaxing weekend :)

  • No clue how you manage this stuff. Good job!

  • Maki on July 22nd, 2007

    Alan,

    In a way, yes. ^_^

I spend around two hours each day on the weekends to do all the stuff I’ve mentioned. Most of the stuff I’ve listed are pretty easy to do and can be finished pretty quickly so I consider them to be somewhat ‘relaxing’. I do a much greater amount of work during the weekdays…… :)

  • Good tips. The weekend is so slow I wonder if I should post any content at all sometimes. I’ll still post, but these are some good ideas.

  • I bring my camera with me wherever I go. I take pictures of popular landmarks, scenic locations, tourist attractions, sunsets, etc, and then sell the good ones online. I don’t usually go out of my way to do this, but if I just happen to see something worth photographing, I’ll take a picture.

BTW – What plugin are you using to allow people to edit their comments? I love it.

  • Very good article. I will try to do that as well.

  • Just what I was looking for “thoughts on how to productively spend my weekend working on my online business while balancing my family, friends and social commitments”.

    Well thought out as usual.

ps – what plugin are you using at the end of your posts? The one that has anchor text: “Bookmark, Share or Email this article.”

  • I’m starting to think that on weekends I should just get away from the computer altogether and hit the trails for a ride or whatnot. I figure I can always write a little extra during the week and just post it on Saturday and Sunday.

  • B. Durant….that’s the way to do it. Perhaps in Maki’s list, R & R should have been number one. A lot of it depends on if you have a family or not. I have a newborn so I know my evening blogging/reading etc. will curtail shortly.
    Great suggestions though.\!

  • I spend a fair amount of time during the weekend working on drafts and catching up on my reading. I spend time creating new sites or working on current sites, often listening to podcasts I want to catch up on, like Jason Calacanis or Shoemoney or John Reese (income.com). During the week I comment and write posts (you have to comment during the time when everyone’s posting or your comments are way down at the bottom).

It’s interesting how similar bloggers can be… and how different at the same time. Thanks for the insights into your schedule, Maki. I learned a lot.

  • As blogging is a physically inactive job with alot of sitting, i definitely try and get moving on the weekends. On Saturday and Sundays after i’m done with my required posts at my blog job, you’ll find me either biking, walking, playing tennis (or like you Maki) at a club where i demonstrate some awesome dance moves. lol.
I think with our line of work (blogging) it is imperative to exercise, move, and get some blood pumping through our bodies.

But i have digressed (yet again) to make oney on the weekends, i spend some time on Blog Catalog networking and mingling with other bloggers, i join directories, i visit and comment with blogs i like and or have subscribed to.

Also i try to do offline reading (mostly mags)

  • From Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon the internet is so slow.. I think

  • Maki,

    who are you?

    your blog is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!

you write truly inspirational articles every day!

I mean, even Darren Rowse @ ProBlogger sometimes doesn’t know what to write and then here comes you with absolutely outstanding material.

I don’t know how you do it, but KEEP IT UP!!!

  • Enjoy read your article. Thanks for the tips

  • keeping personal time is good advice, many of us always put ourselves under lots of pressure with the thought that we have to get there before someone else . . . stay relaxed and focused.

  • If you follow these points in the weekened, then what about weekdays. Do you really sleep. I guess very little!! You are already or very close to be a “SuperMan”!!!

  • I disagree – I run a website about video games. Weekends/holidays see the most traffic to the website!

  • Good ideas. I like it.

  • Maki on July 24th, 2007

Missy, yes I agree.. exercise is definitely useful… can’t sit in front of the computer for too long. :)

B.Durant, getting away from the computer would be great! I’ve tried it for a day before and it was liberating. If you’re feeling burnt out with all the work, getting away will definitely give you a great energy boost.

Daily Edge, The plugin I am using for the signature is the Share This plugin. You can find it here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/share-this/

Hawaii SEO, Making money with photography is an excellent idea. I used to dabble in a little photography but never did spend too much effort in selling the pictures online.

BTW, the plugin I am using for the comment editing is the AJAX Edit Comments plugin. Very cool stuff. Here’s the link for it:http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-ajax-edit-comments/

  • What you wrote is pretty useful for people just starting out on the very bumpy road of trying to “make money online”.

Actually I would like to say, that unless you are able to currently quit your day job or whatever it is you’re doing, to learn and focus on making money online, I think the task is pretty much up to the neck for people who need to work to pay the bills (day job) and have very little time on their hands.

Making money online is actually much more complex than what those self proclaimed gurus would have you believe, in their bid to sell you their products. It truly takes a lot to succeed and the Google gods see to it that it’s as tough as it gets :)

Ideally weekends are great, but its also those times when the temptation to stretch back is also greatest, hehe

  • Thanks for the advice. I recently launched my first internet biz http://www.AskBigPapa.com. I find myself doing lots of research, writing, and other stuff. It can be never ending. I was just thinking to myself that I’ve got to organize my time into blocks and decide specifically what I want to accomplish each day.

I try not to work on Sundays so that I have at least 1 day to completely disconnect physically and mentally.

  • Having just spent most of the weekend digging a new vegetable patch in the garden, I’m not feeling:

    a) totally knackered
    b) inferior since I can’t keep my blog (http://itsanonlineworld.blogspot.com) as up to date as you!

Seriously Maki, this is a great blog. I’ve subscribed and will be reading more of you in the near future.

    Thanks.
