A Simple Way to Create Your Own Personal Feedburner Feedflare

feedburner-feedflares.jpgIn my last article, I touched on some of the feedburner feedflares you can use to either market your content to social websites or generate more interactivity between your subscriber base and website.

The existing third party and official feedburner feedflares I’ve listed were rather helpful but they can’t promote every aspect of your website.

What if you wanted to promote specific webpages, promotions or services on your site? One of the easiest ways to do this is to create your own feedburner feedflare.

Don’t worry, it’s not going to be as difficult as it sounds. In this post, I’ll lay out a very simple way to create a feedflare that’ll help to market just anything you want.

Five Ways to Use Your Own Feedburner Feedflare

A customized feedflare of your own can be used for several purposes:

  1. Increase direct ad sales. The feedflare could be linked to your ‘Advertise’ page so feed readers can be made aware that ad space is available for sale on your site. This is quite useful if you are pursing direct ad sales as a monetization strategy.

  2. Promote Paid Services. If you offer an online service such as SEO consultations, web design or copywriting, you can create a feedflare which links specifically to your services page.

  3. Recommend Your other websites. Multiple feedflares can be set up to link to all your websites if you have more than one. If the websites are related, this will allow you to send your readers from one site to another.

  4. Advertise special promotions. Got an ebook or on-site contest you want to promote? Create a feedflare with an attractive link text. This encourages click throughs and makes any specific promotion a constant reminder.

  5. Include Affiliate Links. You can use feedflares to promote any affiliate programs you want. An advantage of using Feedflares is the you don’t need to cloak the links:all feedflares are redirected through Feedburner.

Creating Your Own Feedburner Feedflare

The fastest method of creating your own feedflare is to use Feedburner’s Generic Feedflare, a feedflare that just consists of a static text with a static link. Here’s an example: As a feedflare, the phrase ‘Advertise on Dosh Dosh’ will be linked to the actual Advertising page on this site.

Here’s the link to customize for your generic flare:

http://www.feedburner.com/fb/variableflareunits/GenericFeedFlare.jspx?

text=Some+text&link=http://www.somelink.com

For example if I wanted to link to Dosh Dosh’s Advertising Page, all I had to do was to do add in the URL as well as the appropriate text (in bold):

http://www.feedburner.com/fb/variableflareunits/GenericFeedFlare.jspx?

text=Advertise on Dosh Dosh&link=http://www.doshdosh.com/advertise

After I’ve created this, I’ll just have to copy and paste the entire link into the Personal Feedflare box, which you can find in the Optimize and Feedflare section of your Feedburner account.

Your personal feedflare will then start to show up in your feed. It’s as easy as that. Feel free to create multiple personal feedflares as you can easily turn them on or off from the Feedburner dashboard.

This concludes my short piece on how to create your own Feedburner feedflare. I’m aware that some of you might not be using Feedburner to manage your feed or perhaps you would like to add more features ontop of the existing feedflares.

I may try to address these issues in another article on how to optimize your feed through the use of several Wordpress plugin, hacks and tools. Till then, have fun creating those feedflares!
