How to Make Money with Domains - Essential Resources for Beginners

domains.jpgI’ve recently been dabbling in domaining during the past few weeks and so far it’s been rather fascinating. Domaining is practice of buying, selling and making money from domain names.

How do you make money with domaining? The easiest way is to practice monetized domain parking or the art of making money from type-in/typo traffic (people who visit websites by typing/mistyping in words on web browser address bar).

What you do is that you’ll place Adsense or other types of Pay Per Click ads (based on the domain’s keywords) on the domain you’ve just bought. You’ll make money when people click on the ads.

The amount is minimal but expands exponentially when you have a vast amount of domains parked. Quantity trumps quality when it comes to monetized domain parking.

An alternative method involves developing specific domains with potential in order to gain traffic while maximizing your ad selling potential. This can involve putting up a basic design along with content, while serving PPC and Pay Per Action ads.

Developed domains also have a higher resell value than undeveloped domains which are parked. In essence, domaining can be somewhat similar to real estate investing, in that it involves detailed appraisals as well as buying/selling and reselling of domains for profit.

Helpful Resources on Making Money with Domain Names

That’s my very brief introduction to domaining. I actually meant to write a more detailed post on the topic but decided to point you to some other excellent resources with more information on the subject. All of them are geared towards beginners with absolutely no knowledge about domaining.

Matt Coddington has a very good series of articles on Domaining 101:

One of the most common questions I’ve seen among aspiring web entrepreneurs is how to get into the domaining business. Domaining is one of the earliest forms of commercializing the internet, and it remains a very lucrative industry for newbies and experts alike.

I cam across Erik Vossman’s excellent domaining for beginners series while reading Blogtrepreneur. I liked how Erik includes his personal experiences on the topic.

Domaining in the sense of strict investing in domain names and squatting on them is simple. You buy a domain name that receives traffic, type-in or referral, and you park the name with a site that provides the layout, the advertising and the tracking of all this action.

NameNewbie is a website which offers articles designed for newcomers into the domaining business. Not a lot of information but some good introductory stuff here.

In a nutshell, the web revolves around domain names and more and more businesses are coming to realize that success starts with the right address. A domain serves the same function on the web that real estate does in the real world. It is the piece of land that a website is built on and just like in the real world, good land is in great demand.

  • Thanks for the linkout Maki.

Yeah domaining is something that I havn’t dipped my toes into yet. You really do need to have gems of a name though and with the amount of squatters out there, its becoming harder by the day to register a decent one.

It’s not a good idea to use adsense to do this if you are using the same account on your site as Google will start serving low quality ads on your site as well.

  • I can’t see a way the income on multiple domains increases exponentially. If you had one domain making $100 a day and acquired another similar, you would just get $200 a day, not a cent more from owning two. It increases linearly.
